HSPD Torch Ride 2021 benefitting Special Olympics

It was a beautiful Saturday morning for a ride. We arrived at Holly Springs Police Dept for the
start. The TLW group raised over $500 for the charity ride and there were a lot of riders
who had shown up for the event. In the registration packet, they provided a cool badge that could
be attached or sewn onto the riders jacket. Many of the riders brought a passenger as well for the ride.

The ride had over 150-200 bikes. We saw lots of different styles of bikes: trikes, tourers, sports bikes,
can-ams. KSU was at a sharp 9:00am.

The ride led us through the downtown Holly Springs and then passed through beautiful back roads through
Rt 42, Old US 1 Hwy, Moncure Pittsboro Rd and past the Triangle Brick Factory. Lots of farmlands on each side
for miles. The police escort was very helpful to keep the group together and at a quick 50-60 mph as they stopped
traffic at intersecting roads letting the riders enjoy unimpedded flow. We arrived at Jordan Lake for a 1/2 way point
by approx 10am for about a 1/2 hr break. The park had restroom facilities and a beautiful overview lookout point
where you could see Jordan lake and Harris nuclear power plant to the right.

We departed shortly and made our way through peaceful farm roads passing Harris lake, the Harris nuclear power plant,
onto New Hill Holleman Rd and then onto Avent Ferry Rd to make it back to Holly Springs and into Lowes Food parking lot.
We passed many homes and cheering people on the way. For many onlookers, the sight of seeing a long stream of
motorcycles brings a smile to their faces.

We reached the parking lot by 11:30am where the Holly Springs PD had setup tents, tables and chairs for the riders.
They had the grill going with music, hamburgers, hotdogs, potato salad, cookies, chips, drinks for us. They also had
a raffle where they gave away local business prizes. We had lunch there and got to speak with other riders. They also
had some chilren who partipate in the NC special olympics come out and meet us.

Special Olympics North Carolina is one of the largest Special Olympics programs in the world with nearly 40,000
registered athletes who train and compete in year-round programs in 20 different sports. They provide year-round sports
training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities,
giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a
sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.

It was a great event and a chance to meet other TLW riders whom we had not ridden with before. Ashish mentioned
it was his first group ride and was excited to participate in more group weekend rides in the future.
